Key Stages 3 and 4

During your sons’ time at Edmund Rice College he will study Art & Design for at least three years, Years 8, 9 and 10. As stated in the School’s Prospectus the boys will follow a course involving them in the use and manipulation of a wide range of two and three dimensional materials and techniques.

Art & Design has proved to be a very popular subject and many of our students in Year 10 opt to choose if for GCSE or GCSE Applies Art Double Award which is equivalent to two GCSE’s. Our GCSE results have been highly successful over the years and as a result we have built up a reputation of which we are justifiably proud.

Having successfully achieved their GCSE’s in Art & Design the students then have the option of returning to the school to do either GNVQ Intermediate or AVCE Art & Design which is the equivalent to 2 ‘A’ Levels and both of which are routeways into University, Art College and Business careers. Both courses have proved very popular and successful to date with many of our former pupils having achieved Degrees and Diplomas.

Over the past six years the Department has recorded a 100% pass rate in Post 16 courses.

The Department also runs a very popular Art Club every Wednesday after school.

An Art Exhibition is also organised in June of each year to celebrate our students exam successes providing teachers, parents and friends the opportunity to view the work in a relaxed and social environment.

GCSE Art and Design develops your creative and imaginative skills and builds on your experiences in Key Stage 3.

During the course you will complete two major projects, using both 2D and 3D materials and techniques. You will explore the work of other artists and designers and develop your own skills

Grades are awarded in the range A*-G.

The final grade is made up of two assessed components:
