The cross country runners of Edmund Rice College kept their tradition of success alive in the school after claiming an array of awards at the Belfast City Council/BELB cross country running championships. The races were held at the Ormeau Park on Monday with a number school’s from throughout the North competing.

It proved to be a very successful day for the ‘Hightown Harriers’ who have been training from September with the focus of competitions such as this in their sights. In the Yr8 cross country race, the Harriers gave a very impressive performance, achieving first place in the team event. Also in the individual race Niall Geehan, Joesph Maskey, Conal Mc Cambridge, Ruairi Geehan, Micheal Cassidy, Owen Murdock and Jamie White finished in 2nd, 4th, 6th, 10th, 14th, 16th, 19th and 29th place respectively.

In the individual race Sean Monaghan, Ciaran Owens, Eoin O’ Halloran, Ryan Morrison and Cormac Connolly finished in 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th place respectively. Overall the ERC team claimed victory in the team event and were awarded the Gold Plate in recognition of their success. In total our cross country runner’s came home with two winners trophies and a Gold plate for first place n the team events. They also received 15 Gold Medals for their perseverance and achievement in cross country running.

These impressive results were gained through the commitment of our cross country running club which has provided regular training sessions after school since the beginning of September each year. One of those committed to the sport is GCSE pupil Ronan Mc Cafferty who has qualified to run in the London mini marathon due to his impressive performance in the Ulster cross country finals. We wish him the very best of luck in London.
